Non Copyrighted Music and the Rise of Community Culture

Before the Internet, any of us who had creative ideas and / or projects had to look for producers, contacts, someone to discover our work, etc. Self-publishing was an almost impossible task, since it required a lot of money, therefore, the need for a sponsor.

Today, there are several platforms that allow people to show their creativity without the need for a sponsor. The Internet is creating a community where artistic work can be freely shared and reused. Non copyrighted music is one of them.

Artists from all over the world make their music known by offering their works to people who need them for their own projects. This is a trend that is growing rapidly and that shows a new paradigm in our society that is more related to a community-based culture.

The twentieth century will be known as the one in which corporate culture became a standard of our society. At the end of the last century, technology changed the way we look at the world. During the first 10 years of the new century, the Internet revolutionized our culture so quickly that we have witnessed the struggle that the old paradigm had to catch up with what was happening in our society. We began to have access to new technologies that allow us to make videos, presentations and even movies. With YouTube, we had the possibility of self-expression. People wanted to tell a story, produced their own videos and used the music they had available. In the second decade of the 21st century, the new regulations restricted the use of copyrighted material about them. And that was when the artists opened a new door to use content: non-copyrighted material.

In general, the only requirement for non-copyrighted material is to add the author in the credits or pay the license.

Today we can find a lot of content without copyright on the Internet. This allows us to work on our own projects with an availability of high quality resources and also provides exposure to artists from all over the world.

As I said before, this is showing a transformation in our society. We are building a community-based culture that leads to self-sustainability. And we can see it clearly in the arts.

Creative Commons, a non-profit organization was born in 2001. This organization is “dedicated to building a globally-accessible public commons of knowledge and culture. We make it easier for people to share their creative and academic work, as well as to access and build upon the work of others. By helping people and organizations share knowledge and creativity, we aim to build a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world.” The free culture movement is aligned with open source software, where systems such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, among others, have allowed the creation of robust and secure content management systems (CMS) that have allowed the creation of websites in a way easy. Developers around the world work together to create free software that anyone can use without restrictions with ongoing development of new technologies in a common effort, allowing people to have their own websites, at low cost.

With this in mind, we can imagine a future that is very different from what we have known in the past, where creativity will not be limited to those who have resources, but will be accessible by all.

  • The Santiago’s Road (Camino de Santiago) and The “Via de la Plata” – A Journey of Self-Discovery

The Santiago’s Road (Camino de Santiago) and The “Via de la Plata” – A Journey of Self-Discovery

When I started my journey on the Camino de Santiago, I was lucky enough to meet a nun who gave advice to the pilgrims before starting the walk. She told us that the road was going to speak to us and that we should listen to it with our hearts. For this, we should keep our minds silent. Therefore, I transmit her message to you, in case you are thinking of embarking on this journey.

There are several roads to arrive at Santiago de Compostela. The Via de la Plata (The Silver Road) is one of them. And to begin, look for train travel to Sevilla, where this route starts.

The Via de la Plata crosses six provinces: Andalucía (Sevilla), Extremadura (Badajoz and Cáceres), Castilla y León (Salamanca and Zamora) y Galicia (Orense, Pontevedra and La Coruña). We have 1000 km to walk and takes between 6 to 8 weeks to finish. This is one of the most solitary pilgrimage options in Spain and it is the perfect setting to make of this pilgrimage a daily 8 hours walking meditation. Make sure that your backpack does not weight more than 10 kilos (around 22 pounds), that you have good trekking shoes and your socks are perfectly fitted.

    Pilgrims

The road is filled with refuges for pilgrims. Some of them will ask you for a donation to stay and the rest will have very low prices – starting at 5 euros. In some cases, you will be nicely surprised with free breakfast, although if you are vegan, bring your own.

At Seville, you must look for a pilgrim passport (credencial de peregrino), a little booklet that will become proof (and souvenir) of your experience. This passport will be provided by the refuge where you stay at the beginning of your journey. And from now on, the host of the refuge where you stay will stamp it at your arrival.

    Pilgrim passport

The day starts early, at 7 in the morning. When I made my trip, I did not think that earplugs were necessary. I was wrong. In most cases, you will share a room with several people and, sometimes, the place to sleep will be a hangar with tons of beds. Be sure to arrive early because the beds fill up quickly, especially in high season.

The nun I mentioned earlier also advised us to look at the sides of the road as we walked. She said that we could find God in the rocks, in the grass, in the birds … Regardless of whether you believe in God or not, the road will give you mystical experiences. You just need to open up to them.

Sometimes, you will feel so tired that you will ask yourself what were you thinking when you decided to start this journey. You are in the middle of nowhere, there are no taxis around, no town on the horizon and your only choice is to keep going, otherwise…

    Via de la Plata

The variety of terrains and landscapes that you will find on The Silver Road is enough for a wonderful encounter with nature. In addition, you will pass through historic sites, little towns, and big cities with a rich cultural heritage. You will have the opportunity to meet with your demons and with your greatness. The Pilgrim’s Way.

  • Gaudí and Expressionist Naturalism

    Gaudí and Expressionist Naturalism

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and today is becoming a leading city on veganism and animal rights. Barcelona also has a cultural heritage that makes this city really unique.

Rich and diverse, Barcelona is the home of most of Antoni Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces. Gaudí is one of the best and more enigmatic architects of modern history. He is the frontman of Catalan Modernism, inspired by Neo-Gothic, European Art Nouveau and Naturalism. La Sagrada Familia is the perfect example of Gaudí’s style, clearly inspired by nature and a place to discover his genius. For those who are traveling, there is a good range of Sagrada Familia apartments nearby. This church is a place to visit more than once, and there are vegan and vegetarian restaurants nearby. So, stay around.

Gaudí was born in 1852 and was the son of the industrial boilermaker Francesc Gaudí i Serra (1813-1906) and Antònia Cornet i Bertran (1819-1876). Along with his father, he was a nature and animal lover. He also had to endure physical weakness in his whole life due to his rheumatism. Gaudí followed a vegetarian diet, had a profound interest in religion and his lifestyle was austere. Sources mention that he was under the guidance of Doctor Kneipp, a German priest expert in natural medicine and hydrotherapy. For lunch, he had lettuce leaves sprinkled with olive oil and some nuts. Gaudi has also had a deep connection to the lower classes. His first large project was workers’ housing in a factory, the Cooperativa Mataronense (“Mataró Cooperative”), intended to improve the workers’ quality of life, but only one section of the factory and a kiosk were built due to Gaudi’s “extravagant” design. Despite his disappointment, Gaudí presented the project at the Paris World Fair in 1878 and that was where his fame began to rise.

    Casa Milá

What we see in Gaudí’s work is extraordinary. In La Sagrada Familia, we find the expression of a profound religiosity merging with the aliveness of Nature.  Seven of his projects have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Batllo, Church of Colonia Güell, Güell Palace, Casa Vicens and Casa Mila.

Nothing is invented, for it’s written in nature first.

    Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí’s style is nature-based forms to create flowing, original structures. His projects are full of curving organic forms, colorful and exuberant. Starting with nature he moved towards the fantastic. Using a technique called trencadis, he recycled broken ceramic tiles from the factory Pujol i Bausis, as well as pieces of white ceramic from broken cups and plates discarded by other Spanish manufacturers. In a sense, Gaudí loved recycling.

    Trencadis. Parc Güell.

Those who look for the laws of Nature as a support for their new works collaborate with the creator.

    – Antoni Gaudi

Gaudí did not finish La Sagrada Familia, his most iconic work. He died at 73 years old struck by a tram on his way from the construction site to confession at a nearby church. But he has left an array of masterpieces all over the city and beyond. More than 150 years later, his work is still a masterpiece of expressionist naturalism.

  • Sabian Symbols

    Sabian Symbols

The Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 phrases of words that correspond with each of the 360 degrees of the wheel of the zodiac, from Aries 1 to Pisces 30. The Sabian symbols were produced in 1925 by clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler.  The symbols were developed by the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones (1888-1980). Dane Rudhyar played a major role in introducing the symbols to a wider public.

    How to use them

    • If the position of the planet is at an even degree (i.e., 27 Scorpio 00), read the Sabian symbol for that degree (i.e., 27 Scorpio).
    • If the position of the planet is at least one minute over an even degree (i.e., 27 Scorpio 01 or 27 Scorpio 15) read the Sabian symbol for the next higher degree (i.e., 28 Scorpio).
    • The most important points of the Zodiac to start your interpretation are the Sun and the North Node: how to embrace your individuality (Sun) and your development path (North Node).

I found the most comprehensive commentaries  for each degree of the Zodiac made by James Burgess, an astrologer linked to Sufism. If you would like to purchase his book with complete information, please click here.
