Moon Square Venus

Squares are formed when two or more planets are 45 degrees apart. This aspect shows internal tensions between two parts of our being that are -generally- in signs that are not compatible.. Despite being considered “negative”, in reality these are creative aspects, which bring to consciousness personal needs that seek to be satisfied. The squares take us out of inertia and open the possibility of self-knowledge through contrasts: we learn to know who we are experiencing what we are not.

The square Moon Venus speaks of contrasts between what makes us feel safe and what gives us pleasure.

The Moon represents our emotional world, what gives us comfort, our unconscious, our emotional needs and everything that nourishes us. Venus describes our affective language, our preferences, and what we value. When these two planets are in a square, our affective language attracts to us that which does not necessarily bring us comfort.

For example, when we have the Moon in Leo square Venus in Scorpio, we enjoy (Venus) the occult, the mysterious, the underworld and even the sordid. The Moon in Leo is warm, cheerful, optimistic, luminous. The tension between these two planets occurs when we attract situations of the nature of Scorpio … where we find pleasure in immersing ourselves in the crudest truths of life, what is dark and hidden, what is taboo. The emotional reaction of a Leo moon who naturally prefers warmth and joy can be one of instant rejection. All squares manifest more or less in the same way, except those found in signs of compatible elements (Water + Earth or Fire + Air). These squares occur when the planets are at the beginning or end of a sign. In this case, the friction is less pronounced and while they show some dissatisfaction, it is still tolerable.

What the squares teach us is to recognize our individuality and to look for ways to solve conflictive situations. In the case of the Moon and Venus, our soul seeks to learn to find emotional security in unfamiliar pleasures. For example, when the square is between the Moon in Taurus and Venus in Aquarius, here we have a great need for calm, tranquility and physical contact at the same time that we like surprises, the unexpected, the disruptive and the intellectual. When we let ourselves be guided by our emotional needs (Luna), we are left without being able to enjoy what we really like. Or if we follow what gives us pleasure, we feel insecure and even unprotected. The square does not imply eternal dissatisfaction, but rather the need for deep self-knowledge where, through conflictive experiences, we learn to discern what truly gives us pleasure, while freeing ourselves from emotional attachments, which, although they provide us with security, they keep us in inertia.

We can say that the squares act like a sculptor who is never satisfied and that, over time, they refine their work until they achieve a unique and coherent masterpiece.

Saturn in Aspect to Personal Planets and the “Impostor Syndrome”

What is “impostor syndrome”?

Imposter syndrome defines an internal experience that makes you feel that you are not as competent as others believe. This can make us ultra perfectionists to the point that we never feel like an expert at anything, even when we spend years and years perfecting ourselves. If someone thinks we are competent, we may feel like we are “deceiving” them.

Aspects of Saturn to our personal planets

All planets describe a part of our consciousness. In the case of Saturn, this planet symbolizes the way we “build” our Being. With Saturn we find lessons and experiential tests that make us mature. As a planet of karma, with Saturn we learn about the causes and consequences of our actions. By analogy, where Saturn is found in our birth chart is where we experience “reality.”

In everyday life, Saturn is projected onto authority figures: parents, teachers, institutions, bosses, etc. How do we experience them? We see that in the aspects that Saturn makes to our personal planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars.

Aspect of Saturn in sextile and trine

When aspects of Saturn to personal planets form 60 degrees angles (called “sextiles”) or 120 degrees angles (called “trines”), they show us experiences that are in harmony with the natural expression of the planets in aspect. They are not in conflict, but rather help each other and build an easy experience of reality. We feel comfortable with what is presented in our lives and we can pass the tests of Saturn without too much trouble.

Aspect of Saturn in conjunction, square and opposition

When aspects of Saturn to personal planets form a conjunction (two planets at a distance of 0 to 10 degrees from each other), a square (at an angle of 45 degrees), or in opposition (at an angle of 180 degrees), we find situations or experiences that are challenging and that show themselves as difficulties and frustrations.

From the point of view of the Soul, these experiences are necessary to awaken certain potentialities, which we can see in the birth chart. Of course, this does not mean that they will live them happily. But, in my opinion, it means that our Being has the capacity (and the need) to go through them to achieve what it came to do in this life.

It is important to know that, although we see Saturn’s energy manifesting in our external experiences, they reflect aspects of our internal reality. That is why, every time we come across situations that seem to repeat themselves as patterns and that are discordant, it is a good idea to ask ourselves «what is this experience showing me about myself?». Everyone’s experience is unique. It takes self-observation, compassion and, especially when it comes to Saturn, wisdom … something that we acquire over time.

Saturn and the Impostor Syndrome

One of the consequences that conjunctions, squares and oppositions of Saturn can create is the impostor syndrome. With Saturn forming these aspects to our personal planets, we may have experienced the authority figures in our lives as “severe” individuals who are never satisfied with our self-expression (Sun), our emotional language (Moon), our communication or ideas (Mercury), our personal preferences and values (Venus) and our actions (Mars). In some way or another, the projection we have made of the Saturnine figures in our lives has convinced us that we are incompetent in the realm represented by the personal planet. As a consequence, it is possible that we have become kings or queens of self-improvement and that we work really hard to be recognized (Sun), to be nurtured and emotionally accepted (Moon), to be heard (Mercury), to be loved or valued (Venus) or being able to act with direction (Mars).

When someone is judging us in a restrictive way, it awakens a feeling of inadequacy that has always been present within us. Both the discordant aspects of Saturn and everything that the natal chart shows us is a glimpse of the essential geometry of our being. The impressions we receive from the outside world have more to do with the position of our Moon than with reality itself. Each one is going to live it differently. What remains constant is the archetypal energy. This means that if, for example, it is the Sun that is square to Saturn, within us there is a conflict between responsibility (the archetype of Saturn) and the expression of Self (the archetype of the Sun). Then, any individual who represents an “authority” will make us feel this internal conflict, which, in the first instance, we see it coming from the outside. This is what is called “projection.”

It is for this reason that observing the experiences we live from a neutral point of view (I know, it is not easy) helps us discover what is happening in our internal world. It is possible that the impostor syndrome happens when our soul wants to develop real confidence. And Saturn will put us through the necessary tests until we succeed.

As I have said before, the birth chart shows us our “life theme.” In it we see the challenges and potentials that are at our disposal. The discordant aspects are growth triggers, what I generally see in individuals with a great capacity for resilience … something fundamental to achieve great goals. And this is the realm of Saturn.

The Moon represents our emotional response to everything we experience, and Venus shows how we express our affectivity.

A person with Moon in Aries square Venus in Cancer will express their emotional needs in an assertive, spontaneous and / or martial way, especially when it comes to everything related to affectivity, caring for others and the desire to protect their own feelings . A person with this aspect can use aggressiveness when feeling hurt. Very explosive, the Moon in Aries will express what it feels without filters and will want to impose its will to get back their internal sense of security. Venus’s position will tell us what gives us pleasure, and when she is in Cancer, we will find pleasure in the intimacy of everyday life.

This phrase by Jean-Michel Jarre is a perfect example of a Moon in Aries Square Venus in Cancer. While he sincerely says what to him is an absolute truth, his phrase can only be applied to those artists who have a Venus in Cancer. His Moon in Aries is manifested when he imposes his truth on others and Venus in Cancer can be seen in his need for relationship and feedback. I took this phrase from the beginning of this interview. Even if you don’t understand French, you can hear his tone of voice (martial) when he describes the only function of an artist.

The Moon in Aries exemplifies the “I Am” as an emotional necessity. It is an instinctive moon that discovers its own emotions as it expresses them, not before that. When someone with the Moon in Aries has his Venus in Cancer, he will attract situations in which they will feel necessary to impose themselves. It is very possible that they attract people who seek intimacy since Venus in Cancer has a very rich affective predisposition. But, as they will first affirm their own needs, those who are attracted to them will soon feel emotionally disregarded.

With this square, our call is learning to express our personal needs taking in count the needs of others.

With Venus in Cancer, caring gives us great pleasure, but the Moon in Aries affirms their individual needs spontaneously and imperatively, and others will feel that we don’t consider their emotions (like Jarre when describing real artists), especially if we relate to individuals with a strong component of Water (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) in their natal charts, who will be strongly attracted to the warmth of Venus in Cancer.

When we learn to express our individual needs clearly and directly (Moon in Aries), in a delicately manner (Venus in Cancer), the effect of the square creates an expansion of relational consciousness, and instead of experiencing it as a conflicting aspect, we can live it as a creative opportunity. Keep in mind that the Moon in Aries reacts spontaneously, without agendas. The Moon in Aries does not know what her emotional needs are until she expresses them when she does not feel them supplied. This creates the need for emotional explosions in their relationships that, once they are appeased, allow them to understand themselves.

Finally, and it is very important to keep it in mind, is that the first thing that others perceive of us when we interact with them is our Venus. That is why a person with this aspect can attract people who are not necessarily compatible with their need to assert their will. If we have Venus in Cancer, we will project a very affectionate image, and that will attract people who seek warmth, care and intimacy. The Moon in Aries is going to take this as a validation of their attractiveness, and they will not understand that what is being asked is to include the others in their affective consciousness.

This aspect is only one within a natal chart where multiple aspects are found. When we read a natal chart, we realize that all aspects build the totality of our Self. If we interpret them separately, we might not have a global understanding of how and why these dynamic aspects are found in our astral chart. There are no negative aspects. All of them have a crucial importance to our growth as individuals. And the squares are responsible for opening new spaces of consciousness.

How to Interpret Conjunctions in Astrology

Imagine that each time a planet interpolates with another, their energies bathe each other. Keep in mind that the planets are in constant motion, leaving a trace in space and time. In the space ocean, cosmic energies dance with each other. When two or more planets are within an orb of 10 degrees, in astrology we say that they are in conjunction. And this aspect shows us where we are working on the integration of two or more energies.

Planetary Energies

The first thing we observe in a conjunction are the planets that compose it. Each planet has a particular energy that will transform the essence of the other.
For example, when Saturn, the planet of responsibility, of the structure, is in conjunction with Venus, the planet of pleasure and values, we find a serious, responsible, conservative Venus, while Saturn acquires grace.

Applicative or Separative Conjunction

When we look at our natal map, the rotation of the planets is observed counterclockwise. It is said that a planet is in an applicative aspect (when the fastest planet approaches the slowest planet to form an exact conjunction) or separative (when the fastest planet moves away from the slowest planet after the exact conjunction). In the applicative conjunction, the fastest planet will manifest through the expression of the slowest planet. For example, the Sun conjunction Neptune in applicative aspect will display humanitarian and universal interests that the Self will be inclined to. The separative conjunction will include the slowest planet traits manifested in the fastest planet. The separative conjunction of Neptune-Sun, will display a dreamy and delicate quality in the self-expression.

Orbs

Each astrologer has their preferences regarding planetarian orbs. Personally, like in the Veda tradition, I consider that the planets in the same sign are already in -subtle- conjunction, and I consider two planets in conjunction when they are at 10 degrees of orb. The intensity of the conjunction is related to the gravitational mass and speed of the planets. If the planets in conjunction fall into different signs, the integration work in a more conscious level, as these energies have enough contrast to be felt as a unity within diverse energies.

A Moon-Mercury conjunction will be obvious when the planets are within an orb of 5 degrees. Both are fast planets. A conjunction between Luna-Uranus, on the other hand, can be felt easily up to 10 degrees of orb.

Conjunctions to Personal Planets

Conjunctions to personal planets will be clearly seen in the individual’s personal expression.

Conjunctions to the Sun modify self-expression and the sense of integrity.

Conjunctions to the Moon will modify our emotional needs and responses.

Conjunctions to Mercury will modify our thought processes and our perception of the environment.

The conjunctions to Venus will modify our personal values, our tastes, attractions and relational values.

Conjunctions to Mars will modify the way we go for what we want.

Conclusion

Conjunctions are aspects of integration between two or more energies that nourish each other. When we find one or more conjunctions within a natal map, we will see areas or internal aspects that are enhanced, whether in a harmonious or conflictive way, to which we must become aware and learn to integrate in a constructive way.
